Terms of Service
Effective September 22, 2026Privacy Policy
These Terms are an agreement between you and Tangent ("Tangent," "we," "us"). They cover your use of the Tangent web app, the Tangent phone app, and the website at www.usetangent.app, which together we call "the service."
Contents
1.Agreement#
By creating an account or using Tangent, you agree to these Terms. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information and is part of this agreement. If you do not agree, do not use Tangent.
2.Eligibility#
You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding contract to use Tangent. You may not use Tangent where the law prohibits it.
3.Your account#
- Give an email address you can access, and keep it current. It is how you sign in and how we contact you about your account.
- An account is for one person. Keep your password to yourself.
- You are responsible for what happens in your account. If you think someone else has gotten in, change your password and email us.
4.Your content#
You own what you put into Tangent: your captures, notes, plans, messages, and recordings ("your content"). We claim no ownership of it.
So that we can run the service, you give Tangent a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, process, transmit, and display your content, and to create information from it, such as categories and summaries, only as needed to provide, secure, and operate the service for you. With your separate permission for AI features, this includes sending relevant content to the AI providers described in our Privacy Policy to run those features. The license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies in backups until they expire and anything the law requires us to keep.
You are responsible for your content and for having the right to put it in Tangent. To the extent we have any rights in what Tangent's AI features produce for you, you may use it as you like.
5.AI features and your choice#
Tangent uses Groq and Google to organize captures, reply in chat, and process voice. An AI request may include the text or audio you provide and relevant saved context. Our Privacy Policy explains which provider handles each feature and how the information is used.
Agreeing to these Terms does not give Tangent permission to share your content with AI providers. The app asks separately before the first AI request. You can decline or turn AI processing off later in Settings. You can still save and read notes without AI; automated sorting, chat replies, and voice features require it.
6.AI can be wrong#
Tangent uses AI to organize what you say, suggest plans and dates, write summaries, and reply in chat and voice calls. AI makes mistakes. It can misunderstand you, put something on the wrong day, leave something out, or state something untrue with confidence.
Check anything important before you rely on it, especially dates, deadlines, amounts, and anything with legal, financial, medical, or safety consequences. Suggestions from Tangent are not professional advice.
7.Not medical advice#
Tangent is designed with ADHD in mind, but it is not a medical product. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition, and it is not a substitute for a doctor, therapist, or other qualified professional.
If you are in crisis or think you may be in danger, contact your local emergency services. In the US, you can call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
8.Acceptable use#
When you use Tangent, do not:
- Break the law, or violate anyone else's rights, including their privacy or intellectual property.
- Use Tangent to harass, threaten, or harm anyone.
- Try to get into another person's account or data, or into systems you are not authorized to use.
- Probe or test the service for vulnerabilities without our permission. If you find a security problem, please tell us at hello@usetangent.app.
- Interfere with or overload the service, or get around usage limits or access controls.
- Share an access code beyond the person it was given to, or sell one.
- Access the service with bots or other automated means, except through features we provide for that purpose.
- Reverse engineer the apps, except where the law allows it despite this restriction.
- Use Tangent to create content that is illegal or that our AI providers' usage policies prohibit.
- Resell Tangent, or use it or its output to build a competing product or train an AI model.
9.Paid features#
Tangent is free to use today, with limits on some features such as live voice calls. We may offer paid features in the future. If we do:
- The price, and what it includes, will be shown before you buy.
- If you buy through the Apple App Store or Google Play, that store processes the payment and its refund rules apply.
- A subscription renews until you cancel it, and you can cancel in your store account settings.
- Taxes may apply depending on where you live.
10.Availability and changes to the service#
We may add, change, or remove features, and change usage limits. When a change meaningfully reduces what you can do, we will try to tell you in advance.
Tangent depends on other companies, including hosting and AI providers, and may be unavailable at times for maintenance, problems at those providers, or reasons outside our control. We do not promise the service will be uninterrupted. Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose; Download my data in Settings gives you one.
11.Ending your use, and deletion#
You can stop using Tangent at any time and delete your account in Settings. Deletion is immediate and permanent.
We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, if the law requires it, or if your use puts other people or the service at risk. Where it is reasonable to, we will tell you first and give you a chance to download your data. If we ever shut Tangent down, we will give reasonable advance notice so you can download your content.
The sections on AI output, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnity, and governing law continue to apply after your account ends.
12.Apple App Store terms#
If you downloaded the Tangent phone app from the Apple App Store, the following also applies:
- These Terms are between you and Tangent only, not Apple Inc. ("Apple"). Tangent, not Apple, is solely responsible for the app and its content.
- Your license to use the app is limited to a non-transferable license to use it on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions, except that it may also be accessed by other accounts associated with you through Family Sharing or volume purchasing.
- Tangent is solely responsible for providing any maintenance and support for the app. Apple has no obligation whatsoever to provide maintenance or support services for it.
- Tangent is solely responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law, to the extent not effectively disclaimed. If the app fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app, if any, to you. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation of any kind with respect to the app, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to a warranty are Tangent's responsibility.
- Tangent, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to the app or your possession and use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection, privacy, or similar laws.
- If a third party claims that the app, or your possession and use of it, infringes their intellectual property rights, Tangent, not Apple, is solely responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement, and discharge of that claim.
- You represent and warrant that you are not located in a country that is subject to a US Government embargo or that has been designated by the US Government as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not listed on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must comply with any applicable third-party terms when using the app, such as your wireless data service agreement.
- Questions, complaints, or claims about the app go to Tangent, using the contact details at the end of these Terms.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms. When you accept these Terms, Apple has the right, and is deemed to have accepted the right, to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
If you downloaded the app from Google Play, Google Play's terms of service also apply to your use of the store.
13.Disclaimers#
Tangent is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent the law allows, Tangent disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement, and any warranty that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that anything produced by its AI features will be accurate or complete.
Some places do not allow some of these disclaimers, so some of them may not apply to you.
14.Limitation of liability#
To the fullest extent the law allows, Tangent will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, loss of goodwill, or missed deadlines or appointments, arising from or related to your use of Tangent, even if we were told they were possible. Tangent's total liability for all claims relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid Tangent in the 12 months before the claim arose or US $100.
These limits apply to every theory of liability. They do not limit liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as liability for fraud, gross negligence, or willful misconduct where that applies.
15.Indemnity#
If you use Tangent in a way that breaks these Terms or the law, or infringes someone else's rights, and a third party brings a claim against Tangent because of it, you agree to defend and indemnify Tangent against that claim, including reasonable legal fees. We will tell you about the claim promptly. This does not apply to the extent the claim was caused by our own actions.
16.Governing law and disputes#
If you have a problem with Tangent, please email hello@usetangent.app first. Most concerns can be resolved that way.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the service will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in San Francisco County, California, and you and Tangent consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.
If you live in a country whose consumer protection laws give you the right to bring a claim in your local courts or under your local law, nothing in these Terms takes that right away.
17.General#
- These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and Tangent about the service.
- If part of these Terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If we do not enforce part of these Terms right away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later.
- You may not transfer these Terms to someone else. We may transfer them as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
- If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without any obligation to you.
18.Changes to these Terms#
We may update these Terms, and the effective date at the top will show the current version. If a change is material, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. If you keep using Tangent after a change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms. If you do not accept them, you can delete your account in Settings.
19.Contact#
Questions, requests, or complaints about privacy or these documents: email hello@usetangent.app. We read everything sent there.
